As you can see, the alarm itself has to shift left and right to keep things centered. This Alarm, for example, has an on and off. But there are times when certain icons need to have a “before and after,” or an “on and off.” It is helpful to think of certain icons as sets that compliment each other, which may allow you to align things in a certain way since you know they are going to and from each other. Some artwork animates on from nothing, and then animates back off into nothing. Whenever there are multiple pieces you can add overlap and follow-through that really give extra dimension, weight, and personality. Even when I approached artwork that didn’t have parts intrinsically built in, such as the house on the right, I ended up breaking them up myself to create separation.

Not only does it make things easier from a technical standpoint, artwork that is designed with a handful of separate parts is undoubtedly the most fun to animate.įor example, the projector screen on the left has three, distinct parts and allowed for some fun pauses and separation of elements. For an animator, though, it’s best to have as many elements broken out into layers as possible. Fills, strokes, outlines, merged shapes - there’s no one way to do assemble the pieces. There are a million different ways to make artwork. But while animating the amazing artwork made by John Caserta, we learned a few lessons that could help designers make pieces specifically for animation, or, shall we say, “animation friendly.” The way in which any artwork is built depends on the personal preference of the artist. That’s why, throughout this article, you will see me using the word “artwork” instead of icon. And so we at Airbnb Design were thrilled at the opportunity to collaborate with The Noun Project and John Caserta to create this fun set of icons animated specifically for Lottie, our open-source animation tool.ĭesigning icons is an art. The headline on The Noun Project’s website reads, “Icons for everything.” But as an animator and motion designer, I read the headline: “ Animated icons for everything,” because whatever I download, I know I’m going to eventually make it move.

The icon will appear as an embedded PDF in the Links panel.Ĭlicking the curved arrow in the Noun Project panel takes you to the icon’s web page, where you can download or purchase the icon, and access related icons.The Noun Project and Airbnb Design have collaborated to bring “ Modern Pictograms” by John Caserta to life. Then just click Insert Icon to place it into your layout. You can also pick a size, but since the icons are vector objects inserted as embedded PDF files, you can scale them to any size without loss of quality. Unfortunately, you can’t choose colors from your Swatches panel. You can also choose the color for your icon in the panel, via a picker, using RGB, Hex, or HSL values. If you search, you’ll see not only free icons but locked ones that you can access only via subscription (royalty-free license) or the website (Creative Commons license). To add an icon to your InDesign layout, browse or search for the type of icon you want. Once you’ve installed the add-on, you can open the panel by choosing Window > Extensions > Noun Project. If you want the royalty-free license, you have to subscribe or pay for each icon à la carte ($2 per icon).

You can download and use icons for free by choosing (and abiding by the terms of) a Creative Commons license. Once you choose the file format you want, you pick your licensing terms. When you’re logged in, you can download icons in SVG or PNG formats. You can also access all the icons from the website by creating a free account.
